Tips from the ADA

The American Dental Association (ADA) is the nation’s largest dental association.  They are a strong advocate for public health and have some tips here to help you and your family stay healthy both at the dentist’s office and at home.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth with floss or another type of interdental cleaner once a day
  • Eat a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks like crackers and juices

  • See your dentist regularly for prevention and treatment of oral disease
  • Tell your dentist about changes in your overall health, particularly any recent illnesses or chronic conditions
  • For younger children – Do not give a bottle or sippy cup to your child when they are going to bed or taking a nap

When should your child see the dentist?

By their 1st birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts. Primary teeth typically begin growing in around 6 months of age.

Every 6 months

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) also recommends a check-up and cleaning every six months in order to prevent cavities and other dental problems.

When considering braces

The American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children visit an orthodontist for the first time no later than age 7. At this point, an orthodontist can evaluate a child’s airway, bite and oral habits. Your orthodontist can then determine if braces or other treatments are necessary.
