What is the Average Price of Braces for Teeth?

The cost of braces can vary, but the average price of traditional metal braces (in the U.S.) ranges from $3,000 and $7,000. The price can increase if you opt for a different type of braces – there are several. Your child’s dentist or orthodontist can help you decide which type is best suited for your child.

Types of Braces and Average Costs

Traditional metal braces aren’t the only option. There are four common types of braces:

Note: The costs outlined below are estimates. For a precise quote, schedule an appointment with your nearest Kool Smiles Kids Club partner dentist.

Metal Wired Braces

Tried and true, these traditional braces are still the most popular type. Metal braces, made from stainless steel, shift the teeth over time. While they’re more noticeable than other types, they’re an excellent, relatively low-maintenance (more on that below) option for orthodontic correction.

Average cost: $3,000-$7,000

Ceramic Wired Braces

Similar to metal wired braces, ceramic braces consist of brackets and wires. Ceramic braces are tooth-colored, so they’re less noticeable than metal braces, but they’re also susceptible to staining from dark-colored foods and drinks.

Average cost: $4,000-$8,000

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are metal braces that are fitted behind the teeth. They’re nearly impossible to see in typical, everyday situations, but they usually require a longer treatment time. Lingual braces can be difficult to clean, so they may not be ideal for kids who don’t have great oral hygiene habits.

Average cost: $8,000-$10,000

Invisible Aligners

Treatment with invisible braces or aligners involves a series of clear plastic aligners that are swapped out across the treatment period. Each set of aligners moves the teeth a little closer to their desired location. Invisible aligners need to be removed for eating and drinking, and they can be easy to lose, so they may not be suitable for children who aren’t responsible enough to keep an eye on them. Replacement trays can be costly.

Average cost: $4,000-$7,400

A Note About Braces and Medicaid

In some states, Medicaid only covers orthodontics if the treatment is deemed medically necessary, and if the child is younger than 21 years old. To determine if Medicaid will cover your child’s orthodontic needs, contact your local Medicaid office.
