What Is a Dental Post and Core?
If your child’s tooth is damaged, whether from injury or decay, the dentist will recommend either repairing or replacing it. When there’s not enough healthy tissue to perform a tooth filling or fit a dental crown, your child may need to undergo a procedure called a dental post and core.
Here’s what you need to know about a dental post and core treatment:
What Is a Dental Post and Core?
A post and core treatment is a multi-step process. Before the dentist can begin the treatment, they’ll need to perform a root canal. Once the root canal is prepared, a post is cemented into the hole. A core is attached to the post, and finally, a crown is affixed to the core.
Post and Core Components and Their Functions:
- The post or rod is a link that anchors the core to the tissue.
- The core supports and strengthens the crown by filling the hollow space inside it.
- The crown mimics the function of a natural tooth.
The post is often made of metal, and the core is usually made of amalgam or composite – the same materials used in routine fillings. The crown is made from metal, resin, ceramic, or a combination of porcelain and metal.
How Much Does a Dental Post and Core Cost?
A post and core procedure can be a multi-appointment process, and the cost can vary significantly depending on the number of appointments required. The average total cost ranges from $252 to $498.
If your child needs a post and core treatment, we recommend scheduling a consultation with a dentist before treatment day. The dentist will assess your child’s unique situation, explain the treatment process, and let you know how much it’ll cost.
